Description
Worm colonies are earthworms contained in a bio-degradable box. Instead of having to dig multiple holes to plant loose earthworms, all you need to do is simply dig one hole every 3 square metres, place the box in the hole, water, and cover with soil.
The key advantages of this product are:
- no need to handle the worms directly
- less effort due to fewer holes needing to be dug
- the worms are not suddenly introduced into a new environment
- as the box degrades the worms will move out at their own pace
Our worm colonies are ideal for both household gardens as well as large landscaping projects.
Each colony contains 25 of the large deep burrowing earthworms – Lumbricus terrestris and 150g of mixed (around 200) shallower soil dwelling earthworms. The container size is 15cm (6″) long x 10cm (4″) wide x 11.5cm (4.5″) deep, the box can be planted anyway up which means it will need a hole around 25cm (10″) deep to accommodate it.

I have recently moved into a new build home and having dug up borders I realised that the soil was water logged heavy clay. I dug it over and added loads of well rotted farmyard manure but noticed that the soil lacked earthworms. I bought boxes of these worms, which were planted on the day they arrived. I am sure they will do a wonderful job on breaking the clay soil and they have plenty of farmyard manure to get them started. I really like the fact that they come in small boxes that can be planted and I didn’t need to handle them. I have a dog and she hasn’t been trying to dig them out so for me it has been a hassle free earthworm introduction.

An excellent way to get worms into the soil, and the advice on their use seems good. However they’ve only been in the ground for a couple of days and so it’s far too early to tell if they’ve succeeded in establishing an earthworm population
This is the second time I have ordered these, the first time was a great success, my garden was teeming with worms after having none.
