The Worm Buffet is an “in ground” wormery this means it is sunk into the ground leaving the lid just above the surface. The worms are introduced into the wormery using a bedding material and then the kitchen left-overs are added on top, this design has several benefits over the traditional wormery:
- Potential smells are greatly reduced
- Problems with flies greatly reduced
- Potential visits by little furry creatures greatly reduced.
- Will not overheat due to being in the sun
- Protected from frost in the winter.
The design of the Worm Buffet is such that the worms can move out into the surrounding soils, most true composting worms will tend to stay where the food is but we achieve this migration by using a mix of species that contain Eisenia hortensis, these will travel out into the surrounding area. The Worm Buffet is particularly beneficial to being used in raised beds so this does not limit its use to customers who only have gardens and/or allotments.
Most suppliers rely on supplying a coir block for the bedding, we do not believe that this is the best material to bed worms in, Worms Direct supply the recommended 250g (about 500) of worms in our own bedding that has been developed over the last 23 years! it is worm friendly, they adapt straight away and significantly reduces the problem of worms leaving the wormery (as often experienced with traditional wormeries) on the initial setting up.
