AFTER-CARE/ INSTRUCTIONS OF LIVE PRODUCTS

Please select one of the drop-down below for the relevant information on the products you bought.

Dendrobaena

Storing for 2 or 3 days – leave it in the bag or tub but add a little damp, shredded newspaper/ cardboard. If keeping for longer, move to a larger, clean container with a well ventilated but tight-fitting lid; add damp, shredded paper and spread an eggcup full of cooked, unsalted mashed potato or a similar vegetable, or our worm food, onto the surface. Never leave the lid off the container. Ignore this if you’ve purchased a Worm Keeper product.

Lobworms

Lobworms should be refrigerated immediately upon arrival. Temperatures should be between 5 and 8 degrees Celsius. If keeping for more than two days, fresh bedding should be added, which should consist of damp sphagnum moss peat mixed half-and-half with damp shredded newspaper/ cardboard or moss collected from logs or lawns. This bedding should be replaced every few days. NEVER add soil or potting composts, nor keep the lobworms in a wormery, and avoid mixing lobworms with dendrobaena bedding. Ignore this if you’ve purchased a Worm Keeper product.

Composting/ Tiger worms

Please add the worms to the wormery as soon as possible. Ensure the bedding is nice and damp and at least 8 inches deep. When supplied without the bedding kit, the worms may migrate away from the worm bin, particularly when we have wet weather and it is dark. If this problem is experienced, the best way to stop it is to place the wormery under low light at night. This might be needed for two or three nights. Leave the lid open, but put a cover directly onto the surface of the bedding, allowing the light to shine into the bin. A wet cloth placed under the bin on the floor will catch any that wander.

Earthworms

In summer, planting should be done as soon as possible. If delayed, the worms should be refrigerated upon arrival until needed. Temperatures should be between 5°C and 8°C. If keeping for more than two days, fresh bedding should be added, such as damp moss and/or damp, shredded newspaper/cardboard. This should be replaced every few days. NEVER add potting composts or dendrobaena bedding.

  4. Dig a hole sufficiently deep to allow the whole box to be at least 6 inches or 15 cm below the surface.
  5. Loosen the surrounding soil.
  6. Place the box in the hole (any way up).
  7. The addition of a little compost from a compost heap (NOT potting compost) is appreciated.

  9. Water again. Job done!
Worm Colonies (Lawn areas) Box

If you won't be planting for a few days, store the worm boxes in a cool place, preferably with low light at night. Avoid opening the colony box or disturbing the worms during this period.

DURING SUMMER ON HOT DAYS: If possible, refrigerate upon arrival but do not allow to freeze. Avoid planting in the heat of the day or in full sun. Dig extra deep holes to reach cooler soil, water thoroughly with cold water, and keep the area damp at all times until the weather cools.

Planting the Worm Boxes:

  1. Calculate the number of boxes needed to cover the planting area evenly.
  1. Remove a small area of turf where you want to plant.
  2. Dig a hole deep enough to allow the entire box to be at least 6 inches or 15cm below the surface.
  3. Loosen the soil around the hole.
  4. Place the box in the hole, any side up will do.
  5. Add a little compost from the compost heap (not potting compost) to the hole.
  6. Water the box and the surrounding soil well.
  7. Cover the hole with soil and the piece of removed turf.
  8. Water the planted area again.
Boxa worms

Place the complete, unopened box below the surface of the waste material to which you want to add the worms, and water well. This contains a sufficient composting mix of worms to start a wormery. Additional bedding will be required if you are looking to inoculate a small compost heap

Worm Tower Starter

If you won't be planting for a few days, store the worm boxes in a cool place, preferably with low light at night. Avoid opening the colony box or disturbing the worms during this period.

When ready for planting, place the entire box in the worm tower, orientated any way up. The addition of a little compost from the compost heap (not potting compost) is appreciated! Water thoroughly, but do not flood. Add the first feed – and the job is done!
