Wild bird. Live feeds

A bit of info.

The Earthworms supplied for bird feed are selected to cater for all size and species of birds that would feed naturally on worms. They are very nutritious, being high in protein, minerals and vitamins, making them one of the most beneficial foods to be included on the bird table, particularly in the winter months when worms are scarce. Worms are less attractive to some of the more unwelcome table visitors, allowing the birds to get their fair share. You will find the addition of a few worms will be a greatly appreciated addition to your bird table.

Standard and Mini Mealworms are the larvael stage of the flour beetle and are becoming one of the most established and important wild bird feeds, reasonably high in protein and like all live worms/grubs can make the difference between wild bird survival or not, particularly in a tough winter and equally - in a hot dry summer, when food can be scarce. Mini's are excellent when birds are feeding chicks.
Very easy to keep, to stop them turning into beetles, keep them in the warmer top part of a fridge or on a cold garage floor.

Most mealworms supplied in the UK are imported from Holland, during their stay with the wholesale distributers, they are rarely fed, many are sent out pretubbed on behalf of the retailer. At Worms Direct we buy them loose and in bulk then we undertake a feeding regime before reselling, this involves feeding the mealworms a balanced and nutritional diet, including fruit and vegetables! not only is this beneficial to the mealworms but ensures they are in the best of nutritional condition when they are used for feeding birds, amphibians and reptiles etc.
Most amphibian and reptile keepers are aware of the benefits of this feeding regime, the same applies to birds whether wild or aviary.

Included in our price is enough food to keep your mealworms fit and healthy for as long as you should need, this and the mealworms are sent in a strong, ventilated plastic tub for your convenience.

Dried Mealworms
We are often asked if we supply dried mealworms, sorry but we don't, there are very good reasons for this, despite all the claims made about being as nutritionally equal to live mealworms, they are not, also a very important factor is the moisture content, live Mealworms do not have high levels of moisture compared to say earthorms (80%) when they are dried they have no moisture at all and when fed by the parent birds to chicks can actually cause de-hydration as the dried mealworms absorb the moisture from the chick, this is the opinion of zoo's that specialise in bird care.

Mikes Blackbird, a nestfull somewhere!

Helping our wild bird population.

Although the breeding and chick rearing season is drawing to a close, feeding worms and mealworms can still be hugely beneficial, there are exhausted parent birds who in themselves can now rebuild their energy, there are still mouths to feed who are no less demanding on the tired parents!

Live "ordinary" worms are particularly good and are recommended over mealworms, they have a high moisture and protein content and this is particularly useful as at this time of year when the ground and soil are comparatively hard and dry they really struggle to find a supply of this, the most natural feed of all. We notice with our tame blackbird pair that whenever they are raiding in the packing shed (and do they raid!) they will go for the worms, mealworms are second followed by maggots and then anything they can find.

As the chick rearing season is just about to start we now have in stock mini Mealworms.
